Best Pokemon FireRed ROM Hacks

The following FireRed ROM hacks are the most played and well-received hacks:

20. Fakemon FireRed

Fakemon firered

Without the word “Pokemon” in its name, Fakemon FireRed had everything you expect it to be: a FireRed hack without a single canon Pokemon in it.

Featuring 386 original Fakemon created exclusively for this ROM hack, players can experience the classic FireRed story in an alternate version of Kanto populated by entirely new creatures instead of the familiar ones.

Some Fakemon can even Mega Evolve and the creator further spiced things up by introducing several fan-made types and moves to make them feel even more unique than the original Pokemon.

Notable Features:

  • 386 Fakemon designed by the hack’s creator.
  • 25 Mega Evolution forms for some Fakemon.
  • The story is the same as vanilla FireRed, with some changes applied in the Kanto region’s design.

19. Pokemon Aesthetic Red

Pokemon aesthetic red

This Pokemon FireRed ROM hack focuses primarily on enhancing the original game’s visuals and soundtrack, but the improvements are so well executed that it feels like you’re playing a remastered version of Pokemon FireRed.

Although Pokemon Aesthetic Red focuses primarily on visual and audio enhancements, it also includes several gameplay improvements. These include an open-world mode that lets you challenge the Kanto gym leaders in any order. Depending on the version you choose, the hack can also rebalance Pokemon stats, abilities, and types for a fresh gameplay experience.

Pokemon Aesthetic Red is available in three versions. The Normal Version includes the visual and music upgrades along with several additional features. The Faithful Version contains everything from the Normal Version while also introducing the rebalanced Pokemon changes. Meanwhile, the Music and Graphics Only Version preserves the original Pokemon FireRed gameplay, updating only the visuals and soundtrack.

Notable Features:

  • Great visual and sound overhaul from the original FireRed.
  • Open-world system for the Kanto League.
  • Can be played in three versions.

18. Pokemon AlteRed

Pokemon altered

Pokemon AlteRed shares some similarities with Fakemon FireRed, but instead of introducing an entirely original roster of creatures, it reimagines existing Pokemon with a wide variety of creative alternate forms.

As you encounter these alternate forms, don’t be surprised if you experience a bit of the Mandela Effect. Many of the Pokemon look strikingly familiar at first glance, yet their designs are different enough to make you question what you remember from the originals.

If one alternate version isn’t enough, Pokemon AlteRed also has its own companion hack, Pokemon AlteRed With Gun. Like the version-exclusive Pokemon in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, each version features its own set of exclusive Pokemon, giving players another reason to try both adventures.

Notable Features

  • 411 alternate versions of Pokemon.
  • Moves up to Generation 8.
  • Reworked difficulty and level curve.

17. Pokemon Nameless

Pokemon nameless

Pokemon Nameless features a compelling story filled with mysteries that will keep you hooked from the very beginning. The game raises plenty of questions right from the start, making it hard to put down as you uncover the truth.

Pokemon Nameless follows the story of Chronya, who is forced to flee the Valo Empire alongside her mother, Altena. Hunted by the Dark Workers under the orders of the Valo Emperor, the two struggle to escape their homeland. After surviving the attack, Chronya’s journey truly begins when an agent named Gavin entrusts her with her very first Pokemon to help protect herself.

Pokemon Nameless serves as both the prequel to Pokemon Mega Power and the sequel to Pokemon Resolute. To fully appreciate its story and overarching lore, it’s best to play those ROM hacks in the intended order before starting this one.

Notable Features:

  • Interesting storyline with multiple regions to explore.
  • Available Pokemon include Generation 4 to Generation 9.
  • Gym battles are replaced with Battle Arenas.

16. Pokemon Outlaw

Pokemon outlaw

Unlike most Pokemon ROM hacks that feature lighthearted adventures, Pokemon Outlaw throws players into a harsh world where only the toughest survive.

Expect plenty of dialogue and story moments that you’d never imagine seeing in an official Pokemon game. The hack explores mature themes, including violence, crude humor, and other bizarre situations, making it one of the most unconventional Pokemon fan games ever created.

The creator fully embraces the hack’s chaotic tone, presenting the game with an unapologetically over-the-top style that perfectly matches the wild experience Pokemon Outlaw has to offer.

Notable Features:

  • Dialogues with dark humor.
  • Unique story.
  • Some parts of vanilla FireRed have been removed because the creator find them boring.

15. Pokemon Clover

Pokemon clover

If you want another FireRed ROM hack with lots of new things that you can easily think of it as one of the games from the core series, we can’t recommend Pokemon Clover enough, especially if you witnessed the golden years of 4chan.

Pokemon Clover was created as a parody of both the Pokemon franchise and 4chan’s imageboard culture. Nearly every aspect of the game, from its dialogue and characters to its Fakemon and humor, embraces this satirical approach.

More than 40 contributors worked on Pokemon Clover, resulting in one of the most ambitious and polished Pokemon ROM hacks ever created. If you’re curious, give it a try and see for yourself just how much effort went into this fan project.

Notable Features:

  • Two unique regions.
  • 386 Fakemon.
  • Competitive AI Trainers.

14. Pokemon Ultra Violet

Pokemon ultra violet

Pokemon Ultra Violet is a perfect choice for players who dislike version-exclusive content in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. This ROM hack makes every version-exclusive Pokemon, item, and other content available in a single game, allowing you to complete your adventure without needing to trade or switch between versions.

Pokemon Ultra Violet is a dream come true for completionists. With enough time and dedication, you can complete the entire Pokedex without relying on version exclusives. The hack also introduces a brand-new island to explore, giving players even more content beyond the original FireRed adventure.

Another standout feature is its unique opening. Instead of receiving your first Pokemon from a professor, you’re free to catch your own starter from the very beginning, giving you far more flexibility in how you begin your journey.

Notable Features:

  • Everything can be obtained here, including all legendaries and trade evolutions.
  • You’re free to choose and catch your starter Pokemon.
  • New area containing all Generation 3 Pokemon.

13. Pokemon Sword and Shield Ultimate GBA

Pokemon sword and shield ultimate gba

Pokemon Sword and Shield Ultimate GBA is definitely the best hack that emulates the vanilla Sword and Shield gameplay experience for the Game Boy Advance. Its creator skillfully recreated the vanilla Gen 8’s story, gym challenge, and even the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLCs.

Of course, Generation 8’s signature Gigantamax mechanic is also featured in this hack. On top of that, players can enjoy other fan-favorite battle mechanics, including Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, and even the Ultra Beasts from the Alola region.

Originally developed in Portuguese, this ROM hack is now fully available in English, making it accessible to a much wider audience and earning its place among the best Pokemon FireRed ROM hacks.

Notable Features:

  • Complete Pokemon Sword and Shield experience on GBA.
  • Gigantamax, Mega Evolution, and Ultra Beasts.
  • New side quests.

12. Pokemon Adventure Red Chapter

Pokemon adventure red chapter

This hack was based on the manga of the same title Pokemon Adventure Red Chapter.

Pokemon Adventure Red Champter somewhat follows the manga but not entirely, because it’s very hard to create a perfect video game adaptation.

Different characters will appear from the manga. Players can get Pokemon based on the main character Red’s Pokemon roster

Notable Features:

  • Physical and Special Split.
  • TMs are reusable.
  • Two Rivals.

11. Pokemon Gaia

Pokemon gaia

Pokemon Gaia is considered one of the best ROM hacks ever made, not among the FireRed ROM hacks.

While it scored higher in previous lists, Gaia has been around for more than 10 years now. It’s only natural that some hacks would overtake it because some of them are new and some of them have updates.

Gaia is a complete hack and is one of those that have been played in speed-running events.

Notable Features:

  • Pokemon roster goes up to Gen 6.
  • Higher difficulty level for Pokemon battles.
  • Mega Evolution.

10. Pokemon AshGray

Pokemon ash gray

This version is obviously for FireRed because there’s another Pokemon Ash Gray that is a fan-made game.

If Adventure Red Chapter was based on the manga, AshGray follows the story of the anime series. We’re talking about season 1 of the Pokemon anime which is also called the Indigo League.

You play as Ash Ketchum and the story follows the anime’s story to a certain degree. Players can get the Pokemon that Ash will get throughout his journey.

His starter is Pikachu and later on gets the Gen 1 starters and more. Embark on this adventure with Ash and a lot of the features available.

Notable Features:

  • New tiles, sprites, and maps.
  • HMs are replaced with tools.
  • Follow the anime’s story.

9. Pokemon The Last Fire Red

Pokemon last firered

Last Fire Red is pretty much Pokemon FireRed with a whole lot of changes and improvements.

The story is still the same but you’ll notice that the game has improved graphics. It actually looks like the Pokemon Black and White games from the Nintendo DS.

Aside from upgraded graphics, there are also additional features in the hack. The roster itself goes up to Gen 7 with updated types, stats, moves, and more.

Notable Features:

  • Mega Evolution.
  • Dynamax in battle.
  • Enemy Pokemon trainer levels scale with you.

8. Pokemon SORS

Pokemon sors

Another excellent entry is Pokemon SORS, a title whose name doesn’t appear to stand for anything. Although it has a sequel, the original remains the better choice for now, as the follow-up is still unfinished.

Pokemon SORS features a completely original story centered around a mysterious phenomenon known as the Eclipse, setting the stage for a unique adventure unlike anything found in the original Pokemon games.

In fact, the hack has the unique Eclipse-type Pokemon where it has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. The graphics look like the NDS games such as HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Notable Features:

  • Pokemon roster goes up to Gen 7.
  • Eclipse-types.
  • Soaring (Fly Over Terrains).

7. Pokemon FireRed Rocket Edition

Pokemon firered rocket edition

You’ve always played as a character who is the hero of the story. In FireRed Rocket Edition, you play as a Team Rocket Grunt.

That’s right, you’re the bad guy, but not entirely. The game has a morality system where you can do good or bad, however you want.

While your goal isn’t to be the best Trainer around, you’re still going to catch some Pokemon. If catching isn’t your thing, you can steal Pokemon from the enemy Trainer that you beat.

Follow the story of the original Fire Red but from the perspective of the Grunt.

Notable Features:

  • Get all 151 Gen 1 Pokemon.
  • Use FLY at the start of the game.
  • Fairy-types included.

6. Pokemon Dark Rising

Pokemon dark rising

This hack is the start of a series of hacks bearing the Dark Rising name. There are many sequels but we’ll be discussing the first and original one, and it has been updated.

Pokemon Dark Rising has its original story taking place in the Core Region. It does follow the usual Pokemon experience such as fighting Gym Leaders, getting badges, and catching a ton of Pokemon.

The Pokemon roster stretches up to Gen 5 but not all are available to catch.

Notable Features:

  • 386 Pokemon to catch.
  • Later-generation moves have been added.
  • EVs have been removed.

5. Pokemon Liquid Crystal

Pokemon liquid crystal

If you’re looking for an unofficial remake of the Gen 2 games, then Pokemon Liquid Crystal is the one for you.

It’s a nice take on the original game releases for Gen 2, although it follows the plot of Crystal much closer.

The updated graphics and being able to play as Kris is such a treat. It has a lot of the original concepts of the Gen 2 games such as crafting Poke Balls from acorns, day and night cycle, and so much more.

The only other game we can recommend such as this is Ultra Shiny Gold Sigma.

Notable Features:

  • Explore Johto, Kanto, and even the Orange Islands.
  • Day and Night cycle.
  • Weather System.

4. Pokemon Dark Violet

Pokemon dark violet

As long as we’re talking about Pokemon FireRed ROM hacks, it’s almost impossible not to mention Pokemon Dark Violet. While the adventure still takes place in the familiar Kanto region and features many of the original characters, the story has been completely rewritten, which is mainly about three Trainers: Red, Blue, and Green.

Think of it as an alternate-universe retelling of the original game. Rather than simply adding new features, the creator reimagined the story from the ground up, delivering a unique interpretation of one of Pokemon’s most iconic adventures.

Apart from an interesting story, Pokemon Dark Violet also implemented various improvements, such having DS-style sprites, new moves, music, and more.

Notable Features:

  • Story takes place from Kanto region but with a different plot.
  • Better visuals for Pokemon sprites.
  • New moveset for Pokemon, mostly based on Black 2/White 2.

3. Pokemon Odyssey

Pokemon odyssey

Pokemon Odyssey is a strong contender not only for one of the best Pokemon FireRed ROM hacks, but also for one of the greatest Pokemon ROM hacks ever created. While it moves away from the traditional Pokemon formula in several ways, the changes are so thoughtfully designed that the hack itself evolved into a multi-genre game.

Instead of simply following the familiar journey toward becoming the Pokemon League Champion, Pokemon Odyssey requires players to fully enjoy the story and region, exploring dungeon-like areas containing a variety of items and Pokemon in their fan-made Etrian forms.

Another standout feature of Pokemon Odyssey is that every battle is a Double Battle. This unique approach adds a new layer of strategy, encouraging players to experiment with different Pokemon pairings, team compositions, and battle tactics to discover which combinations work best.

Notable Features:

  • Dungeon-crawler like adventure.
  • Story is just pure cinema (No spoilers for this one, see for yourself!).
  • Double battles with a bunch of Pokemon with Etrian forms.

2. Pokemon Radical Red

Pokemon radical red

What started as a ROM hack meant to be a challenge, Radical Red has changed over the years.

Nowadays, it is a ROM hack worthy of your time. For starters, it does have the same story as the base game of FireRed. It’s the features that make it different and a whole lot better. From, the beginning, you can choose the variables of your game.

Do you want to make it easy? Do you want to make it random? Are EV and IV stats available? There are so many choices that we haven’t even tackled the quality of life improvements yet. The hack has Mega Evolutions, Raid Battles, Dynamax, Z-Moves, and rich post-game content.

Notable Features:

  • Choose the settings you want your game to be at the start.
  • Raid Battles.
  • Updated graphics.

1. Pokemon Unbound

Best pokemon firered rom hack - pokemon unbound

The number one game on our best Pokemon FireRed ROM hacks list is Pokemon Unbound.

There’s a reason why this FireRed hack is or has been number one in a lot of lists because it is that good. The story elements are good and it will also allow you to customize how you want to play it at the start.

Character customization is also an option and more. It has updated sprites and graphics, special quest progression, and mini-games.

It has Pokemon spanning from numerous Generations. It also has Mega Evolution and Special Forms for other specific Pokemon. You won’t get bored with so much content in this game.

Notable Features:

  • Daily events and special events.
  • Mini-games.
  • Mega Evolution.
