Things to Do Before Getting Cut

Arrive in Azalea Town

Entering azalea town

You have to progress to the story far enough when you arrive in Azalea Town. There are a lot of other things to do here, even before you can get Cut.

The Slowpoke Well

The slowpoke well

When you arrive in Azalea Town, the first point of interest to do is visit the Slowpoke Well. You cannot fight the Gym Leader anyway since a Team Rocket Grunt is blocking the gym.

To start the quest, head to Kurt’s house, which is north of the Gym. After the dialogue, Kurt will then storm off to the Slowpoke Well.

This is a bit of a short quest and nothing too hard. The boss of this is Team Rocket Executive Proton. He has a Zubat and a Koffing as his Pokemon.

You need to finish this quest first and wrap things up with Kurt; that way, you can proceed to the next point of interest.

Gym Battle Against Bugsy

Battling bugsy

Now that the Slowpoke Well is finished, head to the Gym for the battle. The Team Rocket Grunt blocking the entrance will be gone by then. This Gym’s main theme is the Bug type and all the trainers inside specialize in it.

The Gym Leader is Bugsy, and this is just a quick guide to his team.

Bugsy’s TeamMoves

LV 15 Metapod (Bug)Poison Sting
LV 17 Scyther (Bug)Quick Attack

Once you’ve defeated Bugsy, he’ll give you the Hive Badge, which you need if you want to use Cut outside of battle.

Rival Battle

After you beat Bugsy, it’s time to head west to the Ilex Forest. Before you even enter the forest, your rival will pop up and fight you.

His team will vary depending on your starter Pokemon. The battle itself isn’t that hard as long as you’re prepared. Just save ahead either way before you enter the Ilex Forest.

How to Get Cut

When you’re done with all of those quests, enter Ilex Forest. The NPC there will immediately talk to you, asking for help to catch two Farfetch’d that are running about. You must catch these two in order to obtain Cut.

The First Farfetch’d

This one is easy: step on the branch on the ground. This will make the Farfetch’d look in your direction, which is the bottom, where it was originally looking to the right.

Step on the branch

Now just circle around the path at the top, and you can catch it while its back is turned.

Circle around to get the farfetch'd

The Second Farfetch’d

This second one is a bit trickier, but not that hard. Head to the far right where the first Farfetch’d was. You can see the second one at the top, looking to the bottom. Step on the branch to make it face to the right

Step on this branch

Cicle around and approach it, and it will run to the right, which will then face to the left side.

Approach the farfetch'd

Go step on the branches behind it, and it will face to the right.

Step on the branches on the right

Now that it is facing right, just follow the path and get behind it to catch it with ease. Remember not to step on the branches.

Catch the second farfetch'd

After all that, another NPC will pop up and give you HM01 Cut, which you can now use, and you’re done.

FAQs

Can you obtain Cut later?

Yes, but you can’t progress part of the story until you get it, so just get it as soon as you can.

Is Cut a good move to teach?

It doesn’t do well in the late game. It’s good for the early game, but so many better moves come later on. Better teach it to a Pokemon that you don’t intend to use in battle.

What’s a good Pokemon to teach Cut as an HM slave?

A couple of good suggestions for Pokemon that are easy to catch, which are perfect to teach Cut as an HM slave, are the following.
– Sandshrew (with Rock Smash, Strength, and Rock Climb)
– Wooper (with Surf, Whirlpool, and Waterfall)
– Krabby (with Strength, Rock Smash, and Surf)

In Closing

You probably won’t get lost now that you know how to get Cut in Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

HM Cut is very important since some parts of the story will require you to use it. Don’t forget about the secret areas and items that are locked behind a plant.

Later on, Cut just becomes a necessity, so just teach it to a Pokemon that you can tuck away. You won’t be able to replace it like any other HM in the game.
