In the main series games Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, evolving Gimmighoul into Gholdengo is a grind. You need to catch its chest form first, then collect a thousand Gimmighoul Coins just to trigger its evolution.
But in PokeRogue, getting this bountiful Pokemon is surprisingly easy, even though the game doesn’t really explain how.
With its strong Ghost/Steel typing, bonus gold generation, and longevity in battles, evolving Gimmighoul and Gholdengo can be an excellent addition to your Classic or Endless runs.
In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how to evolve Gimmighoul in PokeRogue and how to maximize its value on your team.

Why Gimmighoul and Gholdengo?

At first glance, Gimmighoul might not look like much, but once it evolves into Gholdengo, it becomes one of the most valuable Pokemon in PokeRogue. However, because of its high starter cost (4) and its slow growth rate, most players sleep on this unique Pokemon.
First of all, Gholdengo has a rare Ghost/Steel typing, which gives it 9 type resistances and 2 immunities. It also has high and balanced HP, special defense, and defense. But its highest points are in its special attack, making Gholdengo a bulky special attacker.
What makes it scary is its ability to learn Nasty Plot, raising its special attack by two stages per usage. Pair this with its ability, Good as Gold, which gives Gholdengo immunity to status moves, and you have an unstoppable setup sweeper. Plus, your stat changes can carry over to the next floor.
Another awesome reason for getting Gholdengo is its signature move, Make It Rain. It’s a STAB Steel-type move with 120 base power and a passive that works like Payday. It hits hard and gives you much-needed extra gold after a battle.
Whether you’re planning to beat Eternatus or just want something hard to kill that prints money, this is one Pokemon you want on your team.
Where to Find Gimmighoul in PokeRogue?

Gimmighoul can be hard to find in PokeRogue. Unlike most Pokemon, this one can only be found in a specific area.
- Temple Biome: This is the only biome where Gimmighoul spawns in the wild. It can be encountered at any time of day, but it has a rare spawn rate, so don’t expect to find one immediately.
- Eggs: You can also obtain Gimmighoul by hatching it from eggs. This is how I got mine. While the odds are low, hatching one unlocks it as a starter for future runs.
How to Evolve Gimmighoul in PokeRogue?

Now let’s move on to evolving Gimmighoul into Gholdengo in PokeRogue. Here are the requirements to trigger its evolution. This works for both Chest and Roaming forms of Gimmighoul.
First, you need to get 10 points worth of money items with Gimmighoul in your party. Money items include the following:
- Golden Punch (if given to Gimmighoul) – 1 point
- Amulet Coin – 1 point
- Golden Poke Ball – 1 point
- Nugget – 1 point
- Big Nugget – 2 points
- Relic Gold – 3 points
Accumulating any of these items and reaching 10 points while Gimmighoul is in your team will be the requirement for evolution.
After 10 points have been collected, you only need to level up Gimmighoul once, and it will evolve into Gholdengo. It will also learn Make It Rain right after evolving.
How to Use Gholdengo in PokeRogue?

Gholdengo shines as a setup special sweeper, and the best way to maximize its potential is by utilizing its excellent Special Attack stat and Steel/Ghost dual STAB plus high defenses to set up and annihilate.
- Prioritize Special Attacks: Don’t sleep on TMs for powerful special moves like Shadow Ball, Flash Cannon, and most importantly, its own move, Make It Rain, to take advantage of Gholdengo’s typing and base stats.
- Use Nasty Plot: Look for a chance to safely switch Gholdengo into a Pokemon that can’t deal significant damage to it. Set up 1–2 Nasty Plots, and you’ll be able to sweep entire teams. With two boosts, Make It Rain can one-shot almost anything.
- Max Out Make It Rain’s PP: The only downside is its low starting PP of 5. To make the most of this move, feed all your PP-increasing items into Make It Rain so you can spam it across waves and boss fights.
The Most OP Gholdengo Build in PokeRogue Endless
Gholdengo’s Contrary passive combo is complete bonkers. If you’re lucky enough to unlock the Contrary passive, Make It Rain becomes super busted. It turns into a:
- 120 base power
- STAB-boosted
- Special Attack-boosting (with Contrary)
- Money-generating
- AOE (hits all enemies)
Contrary reverses the effect of stat changes. Since Make It Rain decreases Gholdengo’s special attack by one stage every time it uses it, Contrary will reverse this effect and give Gholdengo more special attack instead. It’s like Torch Song and Payday in one move!
Conclusion
Evolving Gimmighoul might seem complicated at first, but trust me, it’s very easy. Just take all the money items you see whenever they appear in rewards, and you’ll have a Gholdengo in no time. The evolution can happen at any level as well.
The real challenge is obtaining one. But once you catch or hatch one, definitely give it a run or two.
With a solid special attack stat, incredible bulk, and the money-printing power of Make It Rain, Gholdengo is both powerful and profitable. Whether it’s for your first Classic win or your Endless run, the coin entity is a valuable addition to your team.
