melonDS is one of the top players in the Nintendo DS emulation scene today.
For us Pokemon fans, it’s an awesome way to relive classics such as Pokemon Diamond and Pearl or HeartGold and SoulSilver. Don’t even get me started on the Gen 5 games.Â
But what sets it apart from the original DS is that you can now enjoy quality of life improvements and take advantage of modern hardware for better performance. All of that can be done by tinkering with the right settings.
In this guide, I’ll teach you the best settings for melonDS for the most optimized DS experience you can get. Warning: Once you taste 60 FPS, you won’t be able to go back.

Best Settings for melonDS
We’re not here to overhaul your settings or go over complicated stuff that doesn’t even add a single FPS.
We’re here for pure performance and enhanced graphics by making a few but crucial adjustments that will bring out the best of both melonDS and your device.
#1: Enable JIT Compiler

Where to Find: Config > Emu Settings > CPU > Enable JIT Compiler
I can’t stress this one enough and how important it is in improving melonDS’s performance.
JIT, or Just-in-Time compilation, translates DS instructions more efficiently for your PC, making the emulator run way faster.
If you’re on a low-end PC or laptop, you might have noticed games getting laggy or some FPS drops during busy scenes.
For example, when I go to Castelia City in Pokemon Black and White, emulation speed and FPS plummet.
But turning on the JIT Compiler is an instant game-changer. You’ll see noticeable improvements, smoother gameplay, and quicker responses from melonDS. This change alone is the single most important performance setting you need.
#2: Use OpenGL Renderer

Where to Find: Config > Video Settings > 3D Renderer > OpenGL
One of the most irritating issues I encounter with melonDS is crashing when you use the touch controls sometimes.
For example, when using your Poketch in Platinum or Pokegear in HGSS. The solution? Setting your 3D Renderer to OpenGL.
This is required for the touch input to work properly and avoid crashes and errors. Not only that, it also makes graphics more stable.
So, stuff like overworld movement, battle effects, and even surfing animations look cleaner with fewer stutters.
OpenGL works by letting your GPU handle most of the hard emulation work, rather than overworking your CPU like Software Rendering does.
However, if you encounter black lines or minimal glitches, you can always set it back to Software.
#3: Turn Off Limit Framerate

Where to Find: Config > Limit Framerate (Uncheck This)
Limit Framerate is literally capping your emulator’s FPS. It’s a performance limiter and should be turned off at all costs since melonDS has this turned on by default. Unchecking this lets the emulator run as fast as your hardware allows.
I don’t know if you can really call it a drawback, but one of its side effects is inconsistent framerates. If you turn on the FPS display, you will see that sometimes it goes over 60 FPS and dips below occasionally.
However, it translates to better actual in-game performance because battles and overworld travel feel faster and less choppy. If you’re grinding, shiny hunting, or speedrunning, this setting is a must.
#4: 2x Native Resolution

Where to Find: Config > Video Settings > Internal Resolution > Set to 2x Native
Imagine stretching the original DS display and slapping it into a 1920×1080 monitor. That’s what you get if you stick with the default native resolution.
When it comes to graphics, this is a complete game-changer.
Whether you’re playing on a potato PC or a high-end device, setting the internal resolution to 2x native will significantly improve your graphics quality.
The difference is night and day. You also have the option of going higher. But anything above 2x will not yield better results and will only put more toll on your hardware.
What to Expect With These Settings
By applying only these 4 changes to your settings, you can expect the following noticeable improvements in your games:
- Pokemon games can now run at 60+ FPS in the overworld and battles.
- Menus and touchscreen features worked perfectly without crashes.
- Fewer FPS drops and stable gameplay.
- On most devices, gameplay will be faster and smoother than on the original DS.
melonDS Tips for Pokemon Players
- If you’re grinding or shiny hunting, pair the speed of these settings with fast-forward hotkeys for max efficiency. Bet you can’t do that with a DS.
- Save often, especially in longer sessions. Even with these settings, instability and crashes can still happen. So always keep save states and in-game saves.
- Use the built-in FPS counter. It’s located in the upper-left corner of melonDS. In the end, each device is different. Use what’s happening in your actual gameplay and your FPS counter to tweak the settings to best suit your needs. But for me, anything over 60 is more than enough.
Conclusion
Now you can say goodbye to laggy gameplay and low frame rates. With these melonDS settings, you can completely transform your experience.
If your device struggles, prioritize JIT + OpenGL. Visual upgrades like 2x resolution are secondary. But I think you’ll be good even with a low-end laptop.
