Trading Pokemon has been a core feature of the series since Gen 1. Some Pokemon can only evolve through trading, which is one reason why each generation typically has two game versions.
By limiting certain Pokemon to specific versions, the games create a natural incentive for players to trade.
Trading on emulators like the Visual Boy Advance is possible, so would it also be possible for other emulators?
The DeSmuME is a DS emulator, so maybe there’s a chance that you can trade. That can make things interesting when you want to do things legitimately.
We’ll discuss and find ways on how to trade Pokemon in DeSmuME.

Can You Trade Using the DeSmuME?
The answer to this question is no. Unfortunately, there is no way for two DeSmuME emulators to trade with each other.
This isn’t like the VBA, where you can open two emulators and start trading with each other. Don’t worry, because there are alternate methods of trading Pokemon in DeSmuME.
How About Online Trading Using DeSmuME?

Before we go any further, we have to address online trading. For original NDS systems and Pokemon games, you can trade using the internet.
This method is not doable in DeSmuME. The reason is that you’re using a ROM, which in this sense is questionable when it comes to legality.
The moment you connect online, it can be detected as something that is fake. That can lead to problems, so you cannot use online trading through DeSmuME.
Opening two different emulators to do online trading is not doable, and don’t even think about it.
Using PKHeX
This method is a bit different from trading, but it can give you the same effect. It is basically a Pokemon generator that allows you to make or edit the Pokemon in your possession.
The point of trading is to get a Pokemon that you want. Whether it evolves or is not available in the game that you have, using PKHeX can give you the same result.
We have a more detailed guide on the things you can do with PKHeX. This can be used for other games and emulators outside DeSmuME. Â
For this example, we’ll be using a Pokemon HeartGold save file. We’ll be turning a Graveler into a Golem as if it were traded.

The steps below will tell you how to do it. You will need to download PKHeX yourself from its main website. Start off by launching PKHeX and following the steps.
Step 1: Load the Save File of the ROM

Step 2: Click View on the Pokemon
Right-click and pick View on the Pokemon you want to edit.

Step 3: Change Whatever Variables You Need
In this step, change whatever variable you want. For this example, we are changing the Graveler into a Golem.

You can change other things like the name, moves, and so much more. So, feel free to tinker with what you want.
Step 4: Click Set and Replace the Pokemon
When you’re done editing the variables, right-click on the Pokemon that you want to be replaced. In this case, it’s the Graveler.

The new Golem data should replace anything and everything on the Graveler.
Note: You can actually generate a Pokemon that will be applicable for the game. It can then be saved in an empty slot on your party or in the Pokemon PC.
Step 5: Save the File
Save the file by overwriting the existing .DSV file inside your battery folder.

Step 6: Check and See
Load the ROM and your current save file to see if everything worked out well.
Using PokeGen

This is another alternative of how to trade Pokemon in DeSmuME. PokeGen is pretty much similar to PKHeX.
It is a Pokemon generator and editor that allows you to change any Pokemon in your party or Pokemon PC.
We’ll use the same example where we change a Graveler into a Golem with the steps listed below after you launch PokeGen.
Once again, download the latest version of PokeGen on your own from its main website.
Step 1: Open the Save File

Step 2: View the Data of the Pokemon You Want Changed

Step 3: Change Any of the Variables
Like in PKHeX, we’ll change the Graveler into a Golem. Change any additional variables you want if you need to.

Step 4: Set the Data to the Pokemon You Want Changed

Step 5: Save the File
Save the file when you’re done.
IMPORTANT:
It is very important that you save the file as .SAV and not .DSV. Save it in a separate folder and not in the Battery folder of the DeSmuME.
The reason is that if you save it in the Battery folder, it will corrupt the save file. Everything will be lost, and the game will not detect the save file.

Step 6: Open DeSmuME and Load the ROM

Step 7: Import the Edited File
When the ROM is loaded, load the edited save file you made from PokeGen. Do this by choosing Import Backup Memory in the File section.

Find the save file that you stored somewhere. The game will reset, and now you can load the newly edited save file.
Step 8: Check and See
If everything works out, the game will load normally, and your newly edited Pokemon will be there.

FAQs
Is using cheats a good alternative?
If your goal is just to get a specific Pokemon, then yes, using the Pokemon modifier cheat available for the game is an easier and faster route.Â
After all, what else is there in trading? Isn’t it just to evolve Pokemon and get Pokemon not in the game?
The advantage of using PKHeX or PokeGen is that you can modify the Pokemon in a much more detailed manner.
You can edit the nature, moves, and other variables that you can’t do with a Pokemon modifier cheat.
Which one is better, PKHeX or PokeGen?
We would say PKHeX is better because it has a good way of helping you with the legality checker. For PKHeX (image below), you can see some Pokemon that have the red cross.Â
This means that the Pokemon is not acceptable for the game. The Pokemon can still be used, but for online competition, then it will not pass.Â
PokeGen’s later versions do not have this feature. If you don’t care about the legality checker, then both are fine to use.
In Closing
We are able to give you alternatives for how to trade Pokemon in DeSmuME. It is unfortunate that you cannot trade between two DeSmuME emulators at the same time.
Fortunately, these alternative methods, such as using a PKHeX or PokeGen program, should be enough.
Even using cheats can be ideal if you just want a specific Pokemon. The only real issue here is whether you plan on using those Pokemon for online competitions.
Cheats are good, but they’re meant to be used for solo gaming. Nevertheless, with these methods, you can simulate the act of doing a trade all by yourself.
