Why You Need the Team Rocket Uniform?

You need the Rocket uniform to blend in and infiltrate the Goldenrod Radio Tower during a major plot point in the Team Rocket takeover arc.
This arc takes place after you’ve earned your 7th Gym Badge, and it revolves around stopping Team Rocket from using the Radio Tower to broadcast a message to revive Giovanni, their former leader.
How to Get the Team Rocket Uniform in Pokemon HGSS
Step 1: Get 7 Badges
The event where you can get a Team Rocket uniform takes place only after you get your 7th badge. That means you need to beat the Mahogany Town Gym Leader, Pryce.
His team is a barrage of Ice types, so bring Fire, Fighting, and Rock-type moves to demolish him.
But before you can conquer Pryce, you need to capture Team Rocket’s base in Mahogany Town and defeat the wild Gyarados in Lake of Rage.

Step 2: Go to the Underground Tunnel in Goldenrod City

If you go to the Radio Tower now, a Team Rocket member will stop you from entering. This is where the shady outfit comes into play. In order to get past him, you’ll need the Team Rocket uniform.
Go to the Underground Tunnel located southwest of the Pokemon Center, right beside the golden archway. Explore for a bit inside, and you’ll find a Team Rocket grunt near a changing room.
This grunt will mistake you for a recruit and give you the Team Rocket uniform. After a short chat, he’ll give you a full Team Rocket uniform, and your character’s sprite will change instantly (yes, even the hat).
What Does the Team Rocket Uniform Do in HGSS?
While wearing this Team Rocket Uniform, you will be considered by Team Rocket as one of their members, and no one will block you at Goldenrod while roaming around. That also means you can just go past the guard at the Radio Tower, right?
Well, everything will go smoothly until your rival decides to show up and rain on your parade.
If you go back to the Radio Tower and speak to the Rocket guarding the stairs, your rival will snitch on you, and this will expose your disguise, leading to an all-out battle series between you and Team Rocket. That’s how short-lived your Team Rocket trial is.
Here are the most important things about the Team Rocket uniform that you should keep in mind:
- It’s not permanent. It’s only used during this specific mission, and it doesn’t even go to your bag.
- You can’t battle Trainers or roam around while wearing it. So much for trying to run away with the uniform.

Radio Tower Takeover: What Happens Next?
Now that you’ve been exposed, it’s time to go back to hero mode and cleanse this building of Team Rocket.
Battle Your Way to the Top Floor
The path to the top of the tower would be crawling with grunts and a few executives, including Proton, Petrel, and Archer. Their Pokemon should be around level 30-40, but they should be no match for you.
Get the Basement Key
The basement key is required for you to be able to explore the Underground Warehouse further. This can be obtained from Petrel, who is disguising himself as the station manager.
After defeating him, you’ll receive the Basement Key.
Rescue the Real Station Manager
Go to the Underground Station again and use the basement key to go deeper. Defeat more Team Rocket members and solve the puzzles to rescue the real station manager.
Finish The Job
Go back to the Radio Tower once more and reach the top, where you will challenge Archer, the temporary Rocket leader.
Defeating him will end the reign of Team Rocket in Johto once and for all.
Can You Get the Team Rocket Uniform Again?
Honestly, I was hoping that Archer would give you a Team Rocket uniform to keep in case you change your mind, but sadly, he didn’t. And no, you can’t get the Team Rocket uniform again after this story event ends.
