Regardless if you’re playing on an emulator or a Switch console, earning money and leveling up your Pokemon in FireRed and LeafGreen can take quite some time, especially if you’re keen on beating the games without cheating.

Every time your rival confronts you, it’s always a close battle, and his Pokemon catches up to your team’s level. The gym leaders aren’t pushovers either, despite them having a limited number of Pokemon.

Moreover, if you don’t have the Amulet Coin yet, it’s easy to get broke as a trainer in Kanto, especially if you want to buy some Pokemon or TMs at the Celadon Game Corner.

To earn as much money and Exp. as possible and help you prepare against the Elite Four, this guide covers the best farming spots in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, whether you need extra Exp. or Pokemon Dollars.

Key highlights:

  • The best farming spots in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are Route 6, Victory Road, the Team Rocket bridge, Route 15, and the Elite Four’s location.
  • To maximize the money and Exp. you get from farming, you’ll need the Key Item VS Seeker, as well as these held items: Amulet Coin, Exp. Share, and if possible, the Lucky Egg.

5 Most Efficient Farming Spots in FireRed in LeafGreen

Based on all the time we spent roaming around the Kanto region, here are the best locations where you can get tons of Exp. and money in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen.

1. Route 16 (Before the Cycling Road Slope)

From Celadon City, head west, and after passing through the gatehouse at Route 16, you’ll reach the entrance to the Cycling Road.

This area contains six bike Trainers that you can farm Exp. and money with. Use VS Seeker on them to do the farming. You can even rematch with the Trainers as you go down the Cycling Road’s sloped terrain.

2. Victory Road (For Exp. Only)

Before facing the Elite Four and the Champion, you can go back to Victory Road and battle all the high-level wild Pokemon there for some Exp. gains.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use the VS Seeker here, which means you can only fight the Trainers in this area once.

3. The Bridge North of Cerulean City

This is the same bridge where you can perform the Nugget glitch. We got a guide for that, so check that out if you’re interested.

Apart from the glitch, you can also use your VS Seeker to rematch the Trainers in this area, but only if your team is still at levels 20-30.

4. Route 15

Head east from Fuchsia City to reach Route 15. You’ll find a long road here with different types of Trainers along the way. The bird-owner Trainers here are particularly strong, giving you more Exp. and money than the others.

5. Elite Four at the Indigo League (Post-Game)

You can rematch the Elite Four multiple times in the post-game, and since they are Kanto’s strongest Trainers, they offer a great source of Exp. and money.

However, this is only available after completing the main story, meaning you have already proven yourself as the strongest Trainer in Kanto.

Key and Held Items for Farming in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

To farm money and Exp. in FireRed and LeafGreen, you’ll need to keep doing the only thing that allows you to get them in the first place—battling.

While battling Trainers that you meet in your journey is basically a way of farming, it’s not as efficient as staying in a spot full of Trainers and battling them over and over again.

Moreover, you’ll also need to ensure that you’re getting the most money or Exp. out of each Trainer that you beat, so you’ll need the following items:

  • VS Seeker: Triggers rematches with Trainers you already fought.
  • Amulet Coin: Doubles the prize money you get after winning a battle.
  • Exp. Share: Spreads out the Exp. received by at least two of your Pokemon.

Using a VS Seeker in an outdoor area filled with Trainers will cause some of those Trainers to raise hands, meaning they’re ready for a rematch with you.

During battles, make sure that one of your participating Pokemon holds the Amulet Coin so that you can double your earnings upon winning.

The Lucky Egg, although quite hard to obtain, increases the Exp. your Pokemon receives. You can still farm without this item if you want.

The Exp. Share is also optional, but it’s very useful if you need to level up or evolve a weak Pokemon. Make that Pokemon hold the Exp. Share, and it should get some Exp. even if it didn’t join a battle.

Here’s how you can get each of these Held and Key Items:

ItemHow to Obtain

VS Seeker
Go to Vermillion City and enter its Pokemon Center.

Inside, talk to the girl with violet hair and she’ll give you the VS Seeker.

Go up to the second floor of this gatehouse to find one of Professor Oak’s Aides.

Talk to that Aide, and he’ll reward you with the Amulet Coin.

Capture a Chansey that holds a Lucky Egg at the Safari Zone.

Finding a Chansey with a Lucky Egg can take hours or even days depending on your luck.

Chansey spawns with a 1/25 odds in the Safari Zone, and the chances of having one with a Lucky Egg are only 5%.

Encountering the Lucky Egg Chansey isn’t just the hard part.

Since you’re in the Safari Zone, you’ll always run the risk of it fleeing, so bring a lot of patience as well!

Final Thoughts

With the right items, farming money and Exp. in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen becomes much easier. However, it is still important to know the best spots where you can battle multiple Trainers to maximize your rewards.

With enough money, you can finally buy that prized Dratini at the Game Corner or even overpower your rival with ease, no matter how many times you face him.

As long as you are patient and willing to spend time farming, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen can feel much more manageable. You can even explore ROM hacks to further test your skills as a Trainer.
