Pokemon Sword and Shield Hyper Training Guide

Since Generation 7, players have had access to a much more efficient way of creating Pokemon with perfect IVs.

If you are a casual player focused only on finishing the main story, this feature is not something you need to worry about.

However, if you’re into competitive battling, then you already know that every single stat point can decide whether you win or lose a match.

The problem is that the game barely explains what Hyper Training actually does. Many players finish the story without even knowing it exists.

Others unlock it but do not understand how it affects stats or when they should use it.

That is why in this Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield Hyper Training guide, I will teach you everything you need to know to create perfectly trained Pokemon without wasting time or resources.

Pokemon Sword and Shield Hyper Training

To fully understand Hyper Training, you need to understand its predecessor, Breeding.

Both systems share the same goal, which is creating Pokemon with maxed stats for competitive battles. The difference is in how you reach that goal.

Breeding (Old Method)

Note: Hyper Trained stats do not pass down through breeding.

Breeding is the traditional method used to create perfect Pokemon. You place two Pokemon from the same egg group in the Nursery and produce eggs until you hatch one with better stats.

The parents pass down some of their IVs randomly, which gives you a chance to create an offspring with a combination of strong stats.

Breeding can also pass down:

Because IVs can be passed down, you can use one perfect Pokemon to create more perfect Pokemon later. This creates a snowball effect once you have strong parents.

Another advantage is that online battles usually scale Pokemon to Level 50, so you do not need to level Pokemon to Level 100 when relying purely on breeding.

The downside is that breeding is extremely RNG-dependent. It can take dozens or even hundreds of eggs to get the exact combination you want. For new players, it can feel overwhelming and slow.

Hyper Training (New Method)

Hyper Training was introduced to solve many of the problems breeding created.

Using Bottle Caps, you can max out the IV of one stat on a Level 100 Pokemon. Using a Gold Bottle Cap lets you max out all IV stats instantly.

This method is much more straightforward and does not require deep technical knowledge to start. Unlike breeding, you can also apply Hyper Training to:

  • Legendary Pokemon
  • Gift Pokemon
  • Shiny Pokemon
  • Pokemon Caught From The Wild

This makes it one of the best late-game tools for competitive preparation.

Breeding vs. Hyper Training

BreedingHyper Training
Requires a parent Pokemon with strong IVs to start. Can be used on almost any Pokemon you catch.
RNG and luck-based.Requires grinding for Bottle Caps and items.
Cannot be used on Legendary Pokemon.Works on Legendary Pokemon.
Perfect shiny Pokemon are next to impossible.Any shiny can be Hyper Trained.
Requires deeper mechanical knowledge.Much easier to understand and use.
Does not require Level 100.Requires Level 100 Pokemon.
Costs mostly money and time.Requires BP for Bottle Caps or Gold Bottle Caps.

How to Hyper Train a Pokemon in Sword and Shield (Step-by-Step)

The big question for most players is, how do you Hyper Train a Pokemon in Sword and Shield?

Below is a complete, step-by-step guide that walks through the requirements and the exact process.

Hyper Training Requirements

Before you can Hyper Train any Pokemon, you need all three of the following:

  • IV Judge function unlocked for your boxes.
  • Bottle Caps or Gold Bottle Caps.
  • A Level 100 Pokemon.

Good to know: Hyper Training affects IVs only. EV training is still required.

Step 1: Unlock the Judge Function

First, you need access to the IV Judge function, which lets you check IV quality directly from your PC Boxes.

To unlock it:

  1. Complete the main story.
  2. Go to the Battle Tower in Wyndon.
  3. Win six battles.
  4. Defeat Leon when he challenges you.

After this, the Judge function becomes available in your Boxes.

IVs are ranked as follows:

  • Best: 31 IVs
  • Fantastic: 30 IVs
  • Very Good: 26–29 IVs
  • Pretty Good: 16–25 IVs
  • Decent: 1–15 IVs
  • No Good: 0 IVs

The goal here is to get “Best” all across the board through Hyper Training. Or its most important stats, at least.

Step 2: Get Bottle Caps

Getting bottle caps from digging duo brothers

Bottle Caps are the items used for Hyper Training.

Main ways to obtain them:

  • Spend Watts with the Digging Duo Skill Brother in Bridge Field.
  • Purchase them with BP at the Battle Tower shop.

There are two types:

  • Bottle Cap: Maxes out one IV stat.
  • Gold Bottle Cap: Maxes out all IV stats.

Regular Bottle Caps are far more common and are usually enough if you only need to fix specific stats.

Step 3: Go to the Hyper Training NPC

Hyper training npc

Hyper Training is done at the Battle Tower in Wyndon. Speak to the male NPC on the far right of the main counter. Remember, only Level 100 Pokemon are accepted.

You can reach Level 100 using Rare Candies, Exp Candies, or normal battling. The method does not matter.

The NPC will then ask you to choose which type of bottle cap you want to use. If regular bottle caps, you need to choose which IV stat you want to max out.

Make sure you know what role your Pokemon will fill in order to max out the correct stat.

After Hyper Training, the stat will show “Hyper Trained” instead of Best. Functionally, this means the stat performs exactly like a 31 IV stat in battle.

Make sure you only Hyper Train stats that matter for your Pokemon’s role, such as Speed and Attack for sweepers or bulk stats for defensive Pokemon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Hyper Training affect breeding?

No. Hyper Trained IVs do not pass down through breeding. Only natural IVs can be inherited by Pokemon eggs.

Is Hyper Training permanent?

Yes. When a Pokemon is Hyper Trained, the boosted stats remain permanently and cannot be removed.

Is Hyper Training better than breeding?

Hyper Training is faster and easier, especially for late-game Pokemon. However, breeding is still better for creating Pokemon that can pass down perfect IVs to future generations.

Can Legendary Pokemon be Hyper Trained?

Yes. Legendary Pokemon can be Hyper Trained, and this method is highly recommended since most Legendary Pokemon cannot be bred.

Conclusion

Hyper Training in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield completely changes how we approach building competitive teams.

Instead of relying purely on breeding luck, you can now take almost any Pokemon and turn it into a competitive, battle-ready one.

While breeding is still useful for passing down Natures, Abilities, and egg moves, Hyper Training is the fastest way to finalize a Pokemon for competitive play.
