What Causes the Black Screen in Super Mariomon?

Super Mariomon is a ROM hack. This means it heavily modified an existing game file. A black screen error can be caused by various reasons, which makes fixing it quite tricky. 

Here are the usual suspects:

• You’re using an unsupported or outdated emulator
• You downloaded the ROM from another site.
• The ROM patching was done incorrectly
• You’re using the wrong version of the base ROM
• Emulator settings or save files are conflicting

How to Fix Black Screen in Super Mariomon: Troubleshooting Guide

Let’s take a closer look at the potential reasons, and we’ll go over the troubleshooting steps and methods I tried to fix this problem.

1. Use A Compatible Emulator

There are emulators that aren’t great for playing ROM hacks. This has always been an issue for me with Visual Boy Advance. 

This emulator is great for any mainstream Pokemon game. But there are ROM hacks that just don’t work well with it. That includes Super Mariomon.

In my case, switching from my old VBA to mGBA immediately fixed the issue. If you’re using something like MyBoy or a random mobile GBA app, that could be the root of your black screen.

If you are using a compatible emulator but you still get the black screen error, proceed to the next fix.

2. Download ROM From the right source

Now that we’ve ruled out your emulator, there is one more quick fix. Let’s double-check your source.

 Where did you download your Super Mariomon ROM? I recommend only downloading Super Mariomon from a legit source like Pokecommunity. 

If you got it from any other source, chances are, your file might be corrupted and worse, infected with malware. If that’s the case, delete your old Super Mariomon ROM or ZIP file and download it again from the only secure source.

With these two fixes, your game will be fixed 90% of the time. Well, unless you patched the ROM yourself. In that case, proceed to the next fix.

3. Patch Your Game Properly

If you’re one of the few who prefer the harder path of patching the ROM yourself, then the error might have sprung from your patching process. 

First, make sure you have downloaded the latest version of the patch file (bps) from the Super Mariomon website.

Then, you should use a clean Pokemon Emerald ROM for patching. If you have a ROM that might be trimmed, incomplete, or renamed, it will cause errors like the black screen when patched.

Clean Pokemon Emerald ZIP files are usually 6.7MB (6813KB) in size. If your file has a different size, it’s probably modified.

Then, head to a good ROM patcher and start creating your patch. After downloading your patched file, rename it so it doesn’t have the same name as any other file. 

If you have other files such as .sav, .sgm, or .sa1 that share the same name as your ROM, please delete them to get a fresh start and avoid invisible conflicts.

Load it up to a compatible emulator and let there be light.
