Reminder: Story Progress Is Required

In order to get to Violet City, you have to progress to these important parts of the story. You can’t pass through a certain area unless you do these things first.

  • Getting your Starter Pokemon.
  • Meeting Professor Oak.
  • Having your first Rival battle.
  • Going back to Professor Elm, and he’ll give you the Pokedex.
  • Talking to your mom.

All of these will be done in order anyway, and once you’re done talking to your mom, you can now progress to Violet City. At this point, you can explore and do the available areas until you decide to get to Violet City.

Cherry Grove City

You’ve been here before when you initially started the story. This is the point where you head off north to go to Professor Oak. All you have to do here is to head north, leading to Route 30.

Route 30

On Route 30 earlier on, you may have seen these trainers doing a battle. They were originally blocking your way, so this was the part where you couldn’t progress and head to Violet City yet.

Now that you’ve progressed through the story, those trainers will be gone, and you can keep going up north.

There are a couple of trainer battles here, but nothing too hard. Just a couple of youngsters with their Rattata and bug catchers. Keep walking north until you end up on Route 31.

Route 31

When you arrive at Route 31, head north, and you’ll see the entrance to the Dark Cave. You can enter and do some exploring, but without Flash, you won’t get too far.

You can test your luck and get a Dunsparce. Head left, and you’ll encounter a couple more bug catcher trainers to battle.

Continue left, and you’ll pass through a checkpoint. Once you pass through it, you’ll be in Violet City.

Things to Do in Violet City

Now that you’re in Violet City, there are a couple of points of interest to visit. Plus, you have to progress the story anyway, so browse through these things for you to do here.

Sprout Tower

Sprout tower

In terms of story progression, you need to do this first. The Sprout Tower has three floors, and all the trainers are monks who use a Bellsprout. This can be an easy sweep if you have Cyndaquil as your starter.

The head monk, named Elder Li, will have a Hoothoot and more Bellsprout. Finishing the Sprout Tower will reward you with TM70 Flash. This also opens up the Violet City Gym for the battle you will need to do.

First Gym Battle

Gym battle against falkner

The very first Gym Battle in these games is against Falkner. He is a Flying-type specialist, so have your Electric or Rock types ready for combat.

He’ll give you the Zephyr Badge after you beat him.

This is an optional area to go to where they will teach you things related to status ailments. This doesn’t give any reward, so if you already know those things, you can avoid this place.

Yes, accessing Violet City through Route 31 is the earliest way of doing so. Heading left leads to Route 36, which then leads you to Ecruteak City to the north and Goldenrod City to the south.

Heading south of Violet City will get you to Route 32, and continuing south will lead you to Azalea Town.

Is there a swarm in Violet City?

There is a specific swarm in Violet City, and it is a swarm of Whiscash. You will need the National Pokedex first before swarms are accessible.
