If you want a fresh ROM hack straight out of the production line, then you may want to try out Pokemon DarkFire. It is a ROM hack of Emerald and when we say fresh, we mean that it just got released in April of this year.
This also means that the game is still at that stage where it may have some glitches and bugs.
Regardless of those bugs, the game is playable, and most importantly it is free.
Download a copy of the game and it is ideal to patch it with the Emerald ROM (Trashman version) as suggested by the creator. Remember, the game is still in Beta 2, so expect some glitches or minor problems when playing it.

Story
The story takes place in the Tenjo Region, which is located east of Hoenn. There have been a lot of mysterious activities going on. We’re talking about Pokemon not obeying their masters and some of them disappearing without a trace.
It is believed to be the work of some virus that adds a layer of danger to these things. You are now one of those young trainers trying to find the truth to these mysteries and encounter multiple problems along the way.
Features
One thing that DarkFire is going for it is that it has this dark story. It isn’t entirely on the extreme levels of darkness, but you get a tone that isn’t similar to traditional Pokemon games.
The graphics are beautifully done in this ROM hack as they look bright, vibrant, and color despite having that gritty tone. There are a lot of Generation VII influences when it comes to the battle mechanics. There are no Gyms here, as you have to compete in Battle Tournaments.
